Whether you’re visiting Munich or a local, if you take your coffee seriously and want a perfectly poured specialty coffee this is the Munich Coffee Guide for you.
In Munich coffee culture is a unique blend of tradition and modernity, reflecting the city's rich history and contemporary lifestyle. It’s no secret that we happen to plan our travel around coffee and sightseeing. We also happen to work from home and are constantly on the hunt for great cafes to meet new clients or work from. With that in mind here is our guide to coffee in Munich. We will start with a brief overview of what makes coffee culture in Munich so special and then we’ve made a list of our favorite cafes based on activity (dates, working, with kids, etc).
Munich has a strong coffee tradition rooted in its centuries-old café culture. Coffeehouses have been an integral part of the city's social fabric since the 18th century, serving as meeting places for intellectuals, artists, and locals. These traditional coffeehouses are known for their elegant ambiance, where patrons can linger over a cup of coffee while engaging in lively conversations or simply enjoying the atmosphere. An example of a traditional coffee house is Cafe Luitpold.
The tradition of "Kaffee und Kuchen" (coffee and cake) is deeply ingrained in Munich's coffee culture. It's a beloved ritual where friends and family gather in cafes to indulge in a leisurely afternoon treat of coffee paired with a slice of cake or pastry. This tradition reflects Munich's emphasis on relaxation and savoring life's simple pleasures. An example of a cafe focused on “kaffee and kuchen” is Cafe Franca.
Munich has seen a surge in specialty coffee shops and roasters, catering to a growing community of coffee enthusiasts. These establishments focus on high-quality coffee beans sourced from around the world, expertly roasted and brewed to perfection. They often offer a range of brewing methods, including pour-over, espresso, and cold brew, showcasing the diversity of coffee flavors and profiles. These are the types of cafes we frequent - each cafe listed in our list of “Best Coffee in Munich” will fall into this category. A super helpful app for finding the best specialty coffee near you is the European Coffee Trip App.
Munich boasts a vibrant community of local coffee roasters who are passionate about sourcing and roasting the finest beans. These artisanal roasters emphasize sustainability and traceability, working closely with coffee farmers to ensure ethical practices and quality control. Many of these roasters supply their beans to cafes and restaurants across the city, contributing to Munich's thriving coffee scene.
Alongside traditional coffeehouses, Munich is also home to a burgeoning cafe culture that caters to the city's young and cosmopolitan population. Modern cafes blend sleek design with a relaxed atmosphere, offering a wide range of coffee drinks, artisanal pastries, and light meals. These cafes serve as popular hangout spots for students, freelancers, and professionals, reflecting Munich's dynamic urban lifestyle. For some of the best interiors in Munich cafes we love Mary’s Coffee Club, Occam Deli, and Lilli P.
We love to use European Coffee Trip as a first stop when selecting new Cafes to try. When we first moved to Munich we started with this app and tried as many as we could. Here is our curated list of Specialty Coffee Roasters and Cafes to visit in Munich.

Billy's Cafe & Kiosk in Munich is a friendly spot serving up delicious coffee and snacks. With its welcoming atmosphere and tasty treats, it's the perfect place for a cozy date. Whether you're enjoying a morning coffee together or sharing a sweet treat in the afternoon sun. This might be our new favourite spot in Munich. We took the kids, and although there is limited seating inside, we found a cozy corner to drink our coffee while the kids played Street Fighter on their old school arcade machine. A win for everyone!

The slightly larger Sweet Spot am Gärtnerplatz is the perfect place to start a date day. Sit in and have a coffee (seating for about 8 in the shop) and then wander the streets popping in and out of shops along the way. This is one of our favorite neighborhoods in Munich to wander. There are endless possibilities for small clothing designers, homewares and vintage.

We adore this cafe and roastery. A bit out of the way however it’s beautiful location beside a small stream, its ample indoor and outdoor seating and superb coffee made this cafe a fast favorite of ours. There is so much natural light this is also a perfect place to work mid-morning, midweek (it doesn’t open until 11AM!), and also to meet for a date and a walk.

We love visiting Sois Blessed, especially after photo sessions at Konigsplatz. This Cafe and Concept Store is absolutely beautiful, with plenty of seating and perfect oat cappuccinos. They serve WILDKAFFEE - which is also one of our favorite places to go in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Plenty of seating and relatively quiet in the mornings midweek (though it is closed on Mondays!). Highly recommend adding this one to your list if quality coffee and an aesthetically pleasing interior is your thing.

The original go-to Cafe in Munich. This is hands down the place we bring the most people, take the most meetings and generally spend the most time. Free parking, beautiful washrooms, and obviously consistently excellent coffee. A bit outside the city center but absolutely worth the trip.

We stopped into Vogelmaier on a busy Saturday morning with our two kids in tow. We sat at the coffee bar and shared a delicious cinnamon bun, cappuccinos and babyccinos for the kids. Coffee was good, kuchen was very good, ambience was very fun.

This swanky little cafe is located at Londonfrey Munich. Very thematic, aesthetically pleasing cafe with limited indoor seating but plenty of tables under umbrellas on the patio. Great for people watching, decent cappuccino and excellent cheesecake - almost feels a bit like New York.
We haven’t tried the following cafes but they come recommended by friends and are on our list to try next:
Stadtpl. 1, 83714 Miesbach
Open | Tuesday - Friday 7 - 14
Saturday - Monday closed

A dreamy, pink cafe with the most welcoming team. Our hometown favorite. Perfect oat cappuccinos, fresh baked pastries and pretzels. Delicious jams, soups and meat/cheese platters. Truly worth a visit. Ample seating indoors, a bit of seating outdoors in the winter, but plenty of seating outdoors in the Platz once the nice weather comes in Spring.
Wendling 15, 83737 Irschenberg
Open | Monday - Sunday 9 - 22

A sprawling restaurant and bar, which also happens to host a coffee roastery. With views overlooking the mountains, this busy spot is the perfect place for a small group to visit. We like to do the short walk to the Schones Aussicht and make an afternoon of it.
Seestraße 8, 83684 Tegernsee
Open | Wednesday - Sunday 9 - 18
Monday & Tuesday closed

The best cafe for lake/mountain views. Aran has tons of seating indoors and some places outdoors as well. On a weekday there is plenty of space and we love to find a window seat and soak in the views. Obviously you must try their bread and basil sauce, we often take the basil sauce to go (to have with Pat’s homemade sourdough - perfection). This is also one of our favorite places to bring guests, a truly stunning location with consistently good coffee and excellent food.
Tegernseer Straße 101 83700 Weissach
Open | Tuesday - Saturday 8.30 - 17
Sunday - Monday closed

A beautiful cafe, tucked away in Weissach at the end of Tegernsee. Excellent coffee made with their own roasted beans, which you can then purchase for home brewing. A small concept store with lovely bits and bobs (beautiful notebooks) and lovely personnel. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.
I hope this has helped you map out your coffee adventure in Munich! Keep checking back as well, we will update this post as we experience even more cafes in Munich and the surrounding areas.
