With 35 wineries in Prince Edward County to choose from it can be hard to plan your itinerary. I’ve compiled our favorite PEC wineries (and asked a few of our wine expert friends) so that you can reference this post while planning your trip, or during your vacation, if you happen to find yourself with a free afternoon.

Below you will find a list of our favorite Prince Edward County wineries with contact information, opening times, and what to expect in terms of wine and atmosphere.

Karlo Estates

Karlo Estates is the perfect stop on your Prince Edward County wine tour. With a classic red post and beam barn (constructed in 1805) and a quaint dry-stone bridge, you have plenty of options for your winery portrait. Offering both single-varietal bottlings and classic blends, Karlo Estates wines are produced in the old-world style, hand-harvested with extensive natural ferments and minimal intervention. You can find their wines in high-end restaurants across Ontario, but not at the LCBO - they sell out of every vintage each year. They offer vegan cheese and charcuterie boards to enjoy during your tasting. Karlo Estates was named one of Ontario’s Top 20 Wineries in 2021 by Vine Routes.

Trail Estate Winery

One of our favorite spaces for wine-tasting, Trail Estate makes uncompromising, low-intervention wines. If you are an orange wine lover or just looking for something truly unique - this is your spot. Trail Estate Winery doesn't operate as a wedding venue however we have the inside scoop that for the right couple who is eloping they are happy to offer wine and a view. This sounds like our favorite kind of low-key elopement.

Hinterland Wine Company

Hinterland Wine Company offers sparkling wines exclusively.  A covered, open-air tasting room makes this winery the perfect stop, rain or shine. A clean, modern aesthetic, Hinterland stands out as a different kind of wine tasting experience in Prince Edward County. Each time we've visited it's been nearly full, yet there is plenty of space to enjoy your surroundings.

A family-run winery full of character, from the free-range chickens to the historic barn which houses the cellar and tasting room, The Grange is unique and inviting. The largest estate vineyard in Prince Edward County, The Grange produces 100% estate-grown wines. We’ve visited The Grange for date days, bachelorette picnics, and intimate weddings, this is one of our favorite wineries to photograph in Prince Edward County.

Closson Chase Vineyards Inc

The iconic purple barn of Closson Chase is one of the most “instagrammable” places in the County. Beyond the barn, Closson Chase offers premium chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot gris. Using sustainable practices, Closson Chase creates wines that reflect the distinct soil and climatic variations of the year.  Closson Chase was one of three PEC wineries listed in Ontario’s Top Wineries 2021 by Vine Routes. For the foodies, be sure to check out Au Verre by The Marans - everything they create is simply delicious.

The Old Third

A gorgeous restored 1860s barn with plenty of windows with vineyard views, homemade pasta bar and unfiltered pinot noir, cabernet franc, and chardonnay - need I say more? Well in case you're looking for another reason they also make a dry sparkling cider from local, golden russet apples.

No reservations for tastings or pasta bar – walk-ins only. Lots of seating outdoors. No indoor seating. Only groups of a maximum of 4 people are allowed. With no online buying options for wine, it looks like you'll just have to visit in person. Trust us, you'll love it.

Redtail Vineyards

Redtail Vineyards produce classic rosé, pinot noir, and chardonnay primarily from grapes grown on their estate. They also produce a range of Alt wines which are more experimental in flavor, ranging from "polished and premium, to others more fun and frivolous" (Redtail Vineyards). Their production style is minimal intervention, focused on producing the best possible grapes from their vineyard. They have a new outdoor tasting room that looks out over their North Block vineyard. Hillier Creek Estates Winery

Hillier Creek Winery is unmistakable with its restored red barn (estimated to be 160 years old). The 30-acre vineyard grows Gamay, Vidal, and Baco Noir grapes. During the summer season, you can stop in for a wine tasting and wood-fired oven pizza. The grounds are beautifully manicured and the staff is very welcoming. Hillier Creek is also a wedding venue so check opening times before you visit.

Rosehall Run

Dan Sullivan was making wine in Prince Edward County before PEC was known as wine country. Rosehall Run was founded in 2001 and is known for “producing consistent and approachable pinot noirs, chardonnays and sparkling wines” - Vine Routes. Rosehall Run was one of Vine Routes Top 20 Ontario Wineries of 2021. Our favorite, the Pixie Rose is perfect for celebrations when only a sparkling rosé will do. 

Traynor Vineyard

Traynor Family Vineyards was established by Mike Traynor in 2008. They produce low intervention wines, on their 5.5-acre property in Hillier in the heart of Prince Edward County. Their open-air, covered spaces are perfect for enjoying a glass of wine in any weather.

Waupoos Estate & Winery

Waupoos Estate Winery was the first winery in Prince Edward County. Established in 1993, Waupoos now has 20 acres of vineyards growing 18 different varieties. Waupoos hosts a farm-to-table restaurant as well as a wine cellar/ retail store for tastings. Waupoos is located on the water and you can enjoy a walk through the vineyard to enjoy the ambiance of the waves crashing along the shore.
